Lacrosse History

Lacrosse – a team game in which the aim of the team is to score a rubber ball in the opponent’s goal, using their legs and sports equipment, in part similar to the stick.

Lacrosse is literally translated from the French “la crosse” as a “stick”. And the game itself was invented by American Indians, who used it as a training of soldiers, as well as for the peaceful settlement of inter-tribal conflicts.

Native Americans called this sport not only as a “little brother of war” – so to cancel military training provided this game. These archaeological investigations indicate that the predecessor of lacrosse was popular in the beginning of the XV century in places where Canada and North Carolina are today. The composition of the teams in those days were often hundreds of people, and the length of the field used for games, stretched for hundreds of meters or even several kilometers.

The settlers from the Old World for the first time learned about this game in the XVII century in North Carolina state, and since the onset of the XIX century lacrosse became widely spread among the inhabitants of the French colony of Canada. The first official game of lacrosse took place in the same place, in 1867.

At the Olympic Games medals in the sport were played only twice – in 1904 and 1908. Then they lacrosse was canceled and was included in the program for three Olympic Games as the only significant statement. Both times when this game was considered an Olympic discipline, the Olympic gold battered the Canadian national team. For the first time, in a lacrosse event was attended by 36 athletes from the 2 countries, divided among themselves into three teams, two of which were Canadian, and one team represented the United States. As part of one of Team Canada Mohawk Indians appeared.
