One of the latest technology news of the last week is from Australia, where the Australian researchers have developed a technology to help the doctors in imaging the lungs of a patient and respiratory diseases.

The researchers working at the University Of Queensland (UQ) have now successfully developed the country’s first hyper polarized helium gas to be used in the human MRI

The Hyperpolarized Helium MRI employs a special technique which helps to align the magnetic moments of helium atoms. This helps to enhance the MRI signals by up to the six orders of magnitude.

The hyperpolarized effect of the Helium MRI lasts for only a short while. The effect usually lasts up to a total of 80 hours. It is usually dependent on the way the gas is stored and transported. The effectiveness goes on decreasing during that time.

In the near future, the method is supposed to be potentially used for the diagnosis as well as the monitoring of the respiratory diseases in lung clinics.
